South Auckland 2020 funding opens
South Auckland projects running in 2020 can now apply for Participatory Science Platform funding.
SouthSci, the Participatory Science Platform in South Auckland, has just opened another funding round to support local projects that strengthen connections between communities and science and technology.
Community groups or their science/technology partners can apply for up to $20,000 funding per project for 2020.
Expressions of interest are accepted at any time, with full applications due by 5pm Friday 28 February, 5pm Friday 27 March, or the final deadline of 5pm Friday 1 May 2020. Early submissions of both expressions of interest and applications is strongly advised.
“This year we’d love to see projects focus on solid data collection and have a plan in place to use that data to drive meaningful change in your world,” says Sarah Morgan, who manages SouthSci at COMET Auckland.
Previous examples of projects funded by SouthSci have included Otahuhu College investigating water quality in their local park, monitoring and trapping pests to lift birdlife numbers at Hunua School, and Papakura Intermediate School designing and building an astronomically aligned playground specific to their local environment.
Sarah says the project teams are a collaboration between young people and scientists from universities and research organisations, working to complete their projects “which helps schools and community groups find expertise, knowledge and resources they may not otherwise have had access to.”
Projects eligible to receive funding must have community relevance and participation, be tackling a substantive scientific question in active partnership with at least one scientist, and offer enduring educational value and two-way learning for those involved.
SouthSci is one of three region-specific Participatory Science Platform funding initiatives, with the other two based in Otago and Taranaki. The timing of this funding round does not apply to the other two regions.
