Participatory Science Platform
A collaborative group of early childhood education centres around Mangere want to know what their local air quality is like, due to living and working in an area interwoven with industry. They are looking at ways to ensure all their centres have equal air quality and that it is the best it could possibly be.
They are working together with NIWA to develop a tool to measure particulate pollution in air that is accessible and understandable for ECE teachers and under-fives.
They want their teachers to be invested in this tool development process and use the opportunity to invest in professional development around science: specifically air quality and the respiratory system - and how the first affects the second.
The teams are using this project to kick-start a science focus in their centres, where not only are the students helping to design and test a measurement tool, but learning about the science behind air quality and the respiratory system.
They are continuing to use this tool to measure and compare air quality from area to area within the centres, and between them.
