Catchment groups working in South and West Otago, where poor water quality tends to be an issue, have highlighted the need to help community members better understand what lives in the area’s streams and to encourage students to consider the impacts of their own land use upon stream health, and the wider environment. NZ Landcare Trust, along with catchment group members, Otago University and Otago Regional Council staff will work with students from up to 10 schools, their teachers and parents to assess and help raise awareness of the state of water quality in some of their local streams using physical, chemical and biological indicators.
