The Tāmaki Estuary receives runoff from one of the most densely urban and industrial areas of Aotearoa New Zealand. The young people in this project are using cutting-edge next-generation DNA sequencing technology to assess how metal pollution impacts microbial populations in the Ōmaru awa. This work will provide a valuable baseline for monitoring the health of this creek, against which future efforts to improve water quality can be measured.
